Have you ever found gold at your backyard? Well, you can ask any of the residents here at Bau, Sarawak and they will tell you about the gold mine which used to operate at Tasik Biru/Blue Lake. This man-made lake got its name from the Hakka Chinese dialect, “Tai Parit” which means “big drain”. Over time its name evolved to Tasik Biru/Blue Lake because of its unusually blue waters due to the high concentration of poisonous arsenic substance in the lake.

When should you visit Tasik Biru ?
You can visit this scenic blue lake at any time of the day! However, if you wish to cross the lake or try out the water activities then we suggest visiting the lake around 10am. In our experience, this is the best time to visit the lake due to the unpredictable weather here in Sarawak. One thing you should know is that Kuching is the wettest place in Malaysia, on average having 279 days of rainfall annually.

1) Boat Ride
Includes a tour of the lake using the speed boat and a 1 way trip to the Roxy Rock Café
From the café, you will have to walk back to the entrance via the Floating Bridge

How to visit Tasik Biru?
Since the lake is located at the outskirts of Kuching, there is limited choices when it comes to transportation. To get here you either rent a car, take a taxi/e-Hailing or contact Roxy Hotel for transportation arrangements.

How long is the journey to Tasik Biru?
The scenic lake is located just under an hour away from Kuching (38km from the city centre). If you’re planning to drive here yourself, there’s nothing much to worry about as the roads here are quite straight forward with signboards leading to the lake. Useful tips
- If you plan to drive here, ensure that your car tyre and brakes are working well
- Check the weather before making your trip here to avoid getting caught in the rain
- Remember to wear your life jackets whenever you are taking part in any water activities
- Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for any water activities
- During a strong wind or rain, all water activities will not be allowed for safety purposes
- No fishing is allowed as these fishes still have some arsenic content in them
- Beware of static electricity on the floating bridge hand railing! I got shocked multiple times on the floating bridge without noticing the signboard, so remember to watch out
- Please keep the area clean so others can enjoy its beauty too
- Make sure to carry along your camera to snap memorable photos

2. Discover the history and myths of Tasik Biru
The gold mining activities in the small town of Bau began in 1820 and ceased operations a century later due to the flash floods which made it very difficult to resume operations. The gold mine has a depth of over 300ft / 90m and is estimated to still hold around 28 Tons of gold rocks in the lake.

There are several myths, tragedies and sightings in Tasik Biru which emerged over the years amongst the popular ones are :-
Bus Accident Tragedy
Back in 1979, a bus plunged into Tasik Biru, taking away 30 lives. A common belief is that the Lord of the Land and Ground was looking for a human soul to guard the land. In remembrance of the victims, a monument is planned to be erected near the lake soon.

The Stone King
There is a popular story amongst gold miners about a human-like deity believed to be the Stone King. During the mining operation, the stone was removed from the bottom of the lake. The Stone King was not happy with this and decided to flood the mine as a revenge.

3 Monsters of Tasik Biru
There were also numerous sightings of 3 monsters swimming in Tasik Biru and estimated to be as long as 3m! A medium was brought to the lake to carry out a ritual as the 3 monsters were believed to be evil beings roaming the lake. After the ritual was done, these monsters were not sighted anymore.

The Legend of the Golden Tortoise
During mining, a group of miners found a golden tortoise at the bottom of the gold mine. They couldn’t catch the tortoise as it quickly buried itself in the ground. Furious, the miners dug and dug the earth but the tortoise went even deeper. All of a sudden, water began splashing out of the ground and eventually flooding the entire gold mine.

World War II arsenal
There are also rumours that the residents near the lake found Japanese cannonballs and samurai swords from World War II. It is believed to be thrown into the lake by the Japanese forces during their occupation in Sarawak.

This is one of the main attractions here, whereby visitors can feel like they are walking on water.

5. Try out the water activities
One of the best activities here for you to bond with your friends and family is the paddle boat, where you can ride it to the edge of the lake and check out the surrounding area. This ride requires you to do some leg workout though, so be prepared to paddle!

Located across the lake is Roxy Rock Café where you can quench your thirst and purchase some snacks. There is also a bamboo styled bridge leading up to a mini waterfall which you can check out too.

7. Dine at the Tasik Biru Food Village
Just beside the lake, you will be able to find the food court which is open from Tuesday – Sunday, 7am – 12am. After we were done exploring Tasik Biru, we dropped by the food court for a quick meal before heading back to Kuching. There are a variety of stalls here for you to choose from, so finding food here is quite easy and convenient.
